Southern Africa

Southern Africa is a subregion of the African continent comprising the southernmost countries and territories of Africa. The region typically includes South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique and Angola, though definitions vary depending on whether they are based on geography, economics or political groupings. The area is characterised by significant mineral wealth, including deposits of gold, diamonds, platinum-group metals, coal, copper and other strategic resources that underpin much of the region's economic activity. South Africa serves as the dominant economic hub, with the most developed industrial base, financial markets and infrastructure on the continent. The region is home to the Southern African Development Community (SADC), a 16-member intergovernmental organisation established to promote economic integration, peace and security. Key economic sectors include mining, agriculture, manufacturing, tourism and increasingly services, with major trade corridors linking landlocked countries to ports in South Africa, Mozambique and Namibia. The region faces shared development challenges including infrastructure deficits, energy security concerns, skills shortages and the need for economic diversification beyond resource extraction. Southern Africa's population exceeds 200-million people, with diverse linguistic, cultural and economic profiles across its constituent countries. The subregion plays a strategic role in continental trade and investment flows, serving as a gateway for international business entering Africa.
