Independent power producer Globeleq sees significant opportunities in Southern Africa's evolving energy market, particularly as countries liberalise their electricity sectors and seek new sources of reliable, flexible power.

Speaking to Engineering News at the Africa Energy Forum in Cape Town, CEO Jonathan Hoffman said the company is focused on supplying energy-intensive customers, utilities and large private off-takers through a portfolio that includes wind, solar, hydro, geothermal and battery energy storage projects.

Globeleq has developed several landmark projects across the continent, including the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm in South Africa, the Red Sands battery energy storage project currently under construction, and the Menengai geothermal project in Kenya.

Hoffman said growing demand from industries such as mining and data centres is creating new opportunities for large-scale energy developments. He added that battery storage and other forms of flexible generation will play an increasingly important role in meeting round-the-clock power needs.

While regulatory frameworks remain a challenge in some markets, Hoffman believes ongoing reforms are creating opportunities for private sector investment and innovation.

Beyond energy generation, Globeleq also invests in community development initiatives focused on education, healthcare and economic development in the areas where it operates.
