Poland

Poland is a country in Central Europe bordered by Germany to the west, the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south, Ukraine and Belarus to the east, and Lithuania and Russia to the northeast, with a northern coastline along the Baltic Sea. The capital is Warsaw. With a population of about 38-million, Poland has the sixth-largest economy in the European Union. The country is a parliamentary republic and a member of the EU, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the United Nations and the World Trade Organization. Poland's economy is diversified, with key sectors including manufacturing, agriculture, mining, services and technology. Major industries include automotive production, machinery, chemicals, food processing and coal mining. The currency is the złoty. Poland joined the EU in 2004 and has since attracted significant foreign direct investment, particularly in manufacturing and business services. The country is a major exporter of machinery, transport equipment, furniture and food products. Poland has undergone substantial economic transformation since the end of communist rule in 1989, transitioning to a market economy and achieving sustained growth over recent decades.

Southern African Customs Union manufacturers of frozen bone-in chicken portions have until June 22 to request that the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa review antidumping duties before they expire. Mkango advances Puławy rare earth separation plant in Poland

Canadian mineral exploration company Mkango Resources' March 2026 prefeasibility study for a rare earth separation plant at Puławy, Poland, estimates an after-tax net present value of about $779-million at a 10% discount rate, with an internal rate of return of 39.7%. Initial plant capital expenditure is estimated at about $212-million, with production ramp-up expected in the second quarter of 2029.

Polish property assets support Emira and Redefine earnings growth

JSE-listed real estate investment trusts Emira Property Fund and Redefine Properties report that their Polish holdings contributed strongly to distributable income for the periods ended March 31 and February 28 respectively, despite currency headwinds from a stronger rand. Emira's 45% stake in DL Invest earned R146.2-million for the year, while Redefine's Polish platform maintained retail occupancy at 99.2% and logistics occupancy at 98.7%.
