Customers across sub-Saharan Africa are set to benefit from improved access to world-class welding technology, technical expertise, training and after-sales support following engineering solutions company Babcock’s appointment as the preferred partner for global welding manufacturer Lincoln Electric's products across the region.
The announcement coincided with the opening of Babcock's Welding Solutions Centre in Boksburg, Gauteng, on July 9, a dedicated facility designed to help customers improve productivity and welding performance through hands-on technical support, product demonstrations, applications testing and specialist training.
Plant Services MD Hendrik du Toit says the appointment will strengthen product availability, technical support and specialist welding capability for customers across South Africa and the broader sub-Saharan African market.
As Lincoln Electric's preferred partner in the region, Babcock will directly import and stock a comprehensive range of Lincoln Electric welding and cutting inverters, consumables, personal protective equipment (PPE) and welding generators for sale and redistribution throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
The objective, Du Toit explains, is to improve product availability while making Lincoln Electric's technologies more accessible, affordable and supported by local technical expertise.
To help customers maximise performance and productivity, Babcock has established the dedicated Welding Solutions Centre, where customers and channel partners can receive product training, participate in live equipment demonstrations, develop welding procedures and test Lincoln Electric equipment on their own applications before deployment.
Experienced welding specialists are also available to conduct demonstrations, provide technical advice and offer applications support at customer sites where required.
Du Toit notes that Babcock's own engineering operations have provided the company with extensive practical experience using Lincoln Electric products on high-integrity welding, maintenance and repair projects supporting power generation, boiler and pressure-part maintenance, petrochemical facilities and other heavy industrial applications.
The company has also relied on Lincoln Electric welding machines and generator sets across its equipment hire division for construction, maintenance and shutdown projects, enabling it to build extensive technical knowledge supported by comprehensive service, repair and aftermarket capabilities.
Beyond supplying welding equipment, Babcock says it supports customers throughout the equipment lifecycle through technical advice, maintenance services and ongoing applications support.
"To strengthen customer support across the region, Babcock is expanding its branch network throughout South Africa while extending its reach through established operations in Zambia, Botswana and Namibia. The company also plans to appoint additional authorised agents in strategically selected markets across sub-Saharan Africa," Du Toit says.
Supporting these capabilities is Babcock's authorised Lincoln Electric field service and repair centre, which has more than 60 years of experience servicing welding equipment.
Technicians receive yearly factory training on the latest Lincoln Electric technologies, while the facility offers equipment calibration, diagnostic testing, safety inspections, load testing and maintains a comprehensive inventory of spare parts across much of the product range.
Babcock's expanded portfolio includes welding and cutting equipment, consumables, welding generators, PPE and industrial welding systems suited to applications ranging from pipeline construction and heavy fabrication to general maintenance.
Among the products available are the Pipeliner welding electrodes, Innershield self-shielded and UltraCore gas-shielded flux-cored wires, together with the Lincoln Electric Vantage engine-driven welder for remote site operations.
The company also stocks consumables qualified to Sasol and Eskom specifications, while the range includes the Power Wave family of heavy-duty multi-process welding machines, Lincoln Flextec systems, the Powertec industrial range, Speedtec multi-process welders and the Invertec series for workshop and maintenance applications.
"Our preferred partnership with Lincoln Electric is about more than distributing world-class welding products. It is about creating a dependable supply pipeline into South Africa and the broader sub-Saharan African region, ensuring the critical welding equipment and consumables our industries rely on are readily available, competitively priced and supported by local technical expertise.
"We know the value the Lincoln Electric brand brings because we use these products extensively across our own engineering operations. That firsthand experience, combined with our investment in local stockholding, technical capability and after-sales support, enables us to provide customers with a level of service and expertise that extends well beyond the point of sale.
"Babcock operates an open-door approach. Whether customers need help selecting the right welding solution, resolving a technical challenge, responding to an equipment breakdown, training welders or improving the productivity and efficiency of their welding operations, our specialists are ready to assist," Du Toit concludes.
