Commercial Vehicles

Commercial vehicles are motor vehicles designed and manufactured primarily for the transportation of goods or passengers for business purposes, rather than personal use. The category encompasses a wide range of vehicle types, including light delivery vans, medium-duty trucks, heavy-duty trucks, buses, minibuses and specialised vehicles such as refuse collectors, tankers and construction equipment. Commercial vehicles are distinguished from passenger cars by their load-carrying capacity, durability and design features tailored to industrial and logistics applications. The sector plays a critical role in global supply chains, enabling the movement of raw materials, finished products and people across urban and rural networks. In South Africa, commercial vehicle manufacturing and assembly is concentrated in hubs such as Gqeberha, where international brands including Isuzu maintain production facilities. The industry supports a broad ecosystem of component suppliers, body builders and aftermarket service providers. Demand for commercial vehicles is closely tied to economic activity, infrastructure investment and regulatory frameworks governing emissions, safety and vehicle standards. Technological advances in the sector include the adoption of telematics, fuel-efficient engines and the gradual introduction of electric and hybrid powertrains. Commercial vehicle sales and production volumes serve as key indicators of industrial health and logistics sector confidence.

Chery takes ownership of Rosslyn plant, targets 100 000 sales a year

Chery Group has officially taken ownership of the former Nissan assembly plant in Rosslyn, Tshwane, with initial production of the Tiggo 4 expected to start by mid-2027, followed by the Jetour T-series and Jaecoo J5. The facility, with 50 000-unit yearly capacity, will retain 692 former Nissan employees, create nearly 3 000 jobs and pursue 40% localisation by 2028, as Chery eyes long-term sales of more than 100 000 vehicles a year in South Africa.

Chinese brands capture almost a fifth of new-vehicle sales

TransUnion's Q1 2026 Mobility Insights Report shows Chinese brand sales grew 75% year-on-year, giving them more than 19% of new passenger and light commercial vehicle sales, with the Chery Group alone recording 16 094 units. Vehicle affordability is increasingly shaped by financing terms, residual values and total cost of ownership rather than purchase price alone.

New-vehicle market on track to beat 600 000 units as commercial segment grows

South Africa recorded its strongest June since 2007, with sales up 15.3% and all commercial vehicle segments posting year-on-year growth, including heavy trucks and buses up 15.9%. NADA says the industry is well placed to exceed 600 000 units this year, while Stellantis says it is still reviewing its paused Coega bakkie plant amid rising Chinese competition.
