Chery Group has officially taken ownership of the former Nissan assembly plant in Rosslyn, Tshwane, with initial production of the Tiggo 4 expected to start by mid-2027, followed by the Jetour T-series and Jaecoo J5. The facility, with 50 000-unit yearly capacity, will retain 692 former Nissan employees, create nearly 3 000 jobs and pursue 40% localisation by 2028, as Chery eyes long-term sales of more than 100 000 vehicles a year in South Africa.
Chinese brands capture almost a fifth of new-vehicle salesTransUnion's Q1 2026 Mobility Insights Report shows Chinese brand sales grew 75% year-on-year, giving them more than 19% of new passenger and light commercial vehicle sales, with the Chery Group alone recording 16 094 units. Vehicle affordability is increasingly shaped by financing terms, residual values and total cost of ownership rather than purchase price alone.
