Omoda & Jaecoo has confirmed that the Jaecoo J5 sports-utility vehicle (SUV) will be added to the assembly list at the Chery Group’s new South African plant in Pretoria.

The Chery Group acquired the former Nissan plant in Rosslyn earlier this year.

Jetour announced in April that it will start local production of the popular T-Series at the plant next year.

While Jetour, Omoda & Jaecoo and Chery are positioned as separate brands in the South African market, they all fall under the Chery Group umbrella.

Omoda & Jaecoo has also confirmed that both internal combustion engine and new-energy vehicle (NEV) J5 derivatives will roll off the assembly line in Rosslyn.

On sale locally since September last year, the J5 has reached 2 630-unit sales in South Africa.

“The Jaecoo J5 speaks directly to the needs of South African motorists,” says iCaur South Africa and Omoda & Jaecoo South Africa GM Hans Greyling.

“It offers the practicality, technology and versatility customers expect from a modern crossover, while the addition of NEV models gives buyers more choice as the market continues to evolve.”

In Thailand, the J5 battery electric vehicle (BEV) topped SUV registrations for six consecutive months, from November last year to April.

It also led the Indonesian BEV SUV market from January to May. The vehicle also became Australia’s second best-selling electric vehicle in May.
