Name of the Project
Via Africa submarine cable system.

Location
The proposed submarine cable system will connect Europe to Africa along the Atlantic coast. Planned European landing points include the UK, France and Portugal. The route is expected to include destinations along the Atlantic coastline, including the Canary Islands, Mauritania, Senegal, Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria, with extensions further south to South Africa.
Project Owner/s

The project is being built by a consortium of telecommunications operators and digital infrastructure investors comprising Canalink, GUILAB, International Mauritania Telecom, Orange Group, Orange Côte d’Ivoire, Sonatel and Silverlinks.

Project Description
The project aims to develop a new high-capacity submarine cable system to strengthen connectivity between Europe and Africa.

The system is being developed as an open, consortium-based subsea infrastructure project. This model will enable participating partners to co-invest in the system and participate in decisions pertaining to its design, deployment and operation. The initial partners have indicated that additional partners may join the project in future. The initial phase will involve a jointly financed route study to identify the optimal cable route, taking into account resilience, technical feasibility and economic efficiency. In parallel, the consortium is preparing the procurement process for the selection of a cable supplier.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
The total capital expenditure has not been stated in the sources reviewed. The consortium members will jointly finance the initial cable route study.

Planned Start/End Date
No construction start date or completion date has been reported.

Latest Developments
On May 12, 2026, Orange and its partners announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding to initiate the project.
