Zuma to officially launch new Toyota lineup in Durban
While production of the all-new Toyota Hilux and Fortuner models ramps up, President Jacob Zuma will officially unveil the new plant additions at Toyota South Africa’s Prospecton manufacturing facility, in Durban.
The Tuesday launch of the new lines, which had been operating since February, was one of the outcomes of Toyota's R6.1-billion investment in South Africa's manufacturing industry and the country's local vehicle production.
The new vehicle model lineup and the investment undertaken to bring it about were expected to support more than 4 000 jobs.
The Prospecton facility currently had in excess of 8 000 employees.
In May, Toyota announced that demand for the all-new eighth-generation Hilux, which went on sale in March, and the latest edition of the Fortuner, which entered the market mid-April, enabled the automotive producer to take the top spot in retail sales last month, surpassing the sales of its rivals by 28%, with overall volumes exceeding 8 700 in April.
In its first month of sales, the new-generation Hilux found 3 221 new homes, while the Fortuner recorded 846 sales in just 14 retail days.
“The investment by the Japanese manufacturer Toyota is a demonstration of the continued confidence that global automotive producers have in South Africa as an investment destination and the supportive policy environment that the country offers,” the Presidency said in a statement on Friday.
Zuma would launch the plant as part of government’s Automotive Production and Development Programme, as well as fruit of its nine-point plan to grow the economy and create jobs.
