Mutual insurance provider Rand Mutual Assurance (RMA) used its presence at A-OSH Expo 2026 to highlight its evolution from a traditional workers’ compensation provider into a broader social insurer focused on prevention, rehabilitation and worker wellbeing.

Speaking to Engineering News, RMA prevention head Dr Jessica Hutchings and prevention programme manager Ronwin Goliath said the company’s integrated approach seeks to prevent workplace incidents before compensation becomes necessary.

Launched in 2022, RMA’s prevention programme aims to reduce workplace injuries and occupational diseases through improved safety practices, employee wellness initiatives and stronger workplace safety cultures. The programme is supported by rehabilitation services that help injured workers return to work where possible, as well as upskilling initiatives and pensioner welfare support.

Companies participating in RMA’s prevention programme have achieved significant improvements, including a 50% reduction in eye and hand injuries and a more than 29% improvement in total claims ratios. RMA also reported stronger safety cultures among participating organisations and growing engagement from labour representatives trained through its occupational health and safety programmes.

At this year's expo, RMA showcased its holistic service offering, including prevention, rehabilitation, group risk and consolidated funeral products, positioning itself as a one-stop provider focused on improving worker health, safety and wellbeing across South Africa’s mining and metals sectors.
