Substance abuse control specialist Alco-Safe is showcasing technologies aimed at helping employers prevent alcohol- and drug-impaired workers from entering high-risk workplaces.

Speaking to Engineering News at A-OSH Expo 2026, Alco-Safe MD Rhys Evans said growing awareness of the risks associated with substance abuse is driving demand for more effective workplace screening solutions.

Evans noted that while companies continue to invest in health and safety systems, these measures can be compromised if workers enter sites while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

To address this challenge, Alco-Safe offers a range of alcohol and drug testing solutions, including saliva-based drug testing, which can be conducted at site entrances, and unmanned breathalyser systems integrated with access control infrastructure.

Among the technologies showcased at this year's exhibition is a wall-mounted breathalyser linked to facial recognition software, enabling workers to be identified and tested before being granted site access.

The company also introduced the latest version of its AlcoBlow screening device, which can test up to 18 people a minute and incorporates bluetooth connectivity for digital record-keeping and reporting. The new AlcoBlow Pro also includes a rechargeable battery option, a feature designed to support high-throughput screening environments where battery consumption can be significant.

Evans said the technologies are designed to make workplace screening faster and easier while helping employers ensure that employees entering their sites are fit for duty.
