Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau reported on Friday that he would designate the Fetakgomo Tubatse Special Economic Zone (FTSEZ), in Limpopo, following Cabinet’s approval of the zone earlier in the week.

Located in the Sekhukhune district, FTSEZ covers a total of 1 000 ha, and Tau said in a statement that it would serve as an industrial hub for investments in the mineral beneficiation, energy, agriculture, and automotive sectors.

He indicated that it would also support the development and strengthening of the platinum group metals, chrome and hydrogen value chains.

A due diligence conducted by the Industrial Development Corporation reportedly showed that nine investors were committed to proceeding with investments in the zone.

“A total of 46 companies are currently on the investment pipeline with a combined investment value of approximately R52.6-billion. We foresee that these companies will create 8 000 jobs in the short term and over 20 000 jobs in 10 years,” Tau said.

The FTSEZ will be developed in three phases, with Phase 1 involving the development of the northern section of the site, located between the R555 and the Steelpoort river, to support light to medium industries.

An SEZ entity had been established and a board had also been appointed.

The Limpopo government will provide financial support for the development of critical infrastructure, while the Sekhukhune district municipality has pledged to fund the infrastructure needed to implement the SEZ.
