The South African Revenue Service (Sars) on Monday confirmed that it has been informed that the Office of the Tax Ombud has been given permission to investigate Sars’s systems.

Sars said in a statement on Monday that it fully supported the investigation.

“Given the recent narrative about the issue of refunds, we are confident that the results of this investigation will provide the South African public with the requisite confidence in the Sars systems,” Sars said.

The organisation further stated that it is in the interest of Sars and the public to finally find closure and finality to this issue.

“We remain confident about the strength and ‘robustness’ of the Sars systems and processes.

“Sars looks forward to cooperating with the Tax Ombud and providing any assistance going forward.”
