Sacci reports restrained October trade conditions
The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) trade survey for October indicates constricted trade conditions, with the Trade Activity Index (TAI) remaining at 51 and the seasonally adjusted TAI four points lower than in September, at 48.
However, the seasonally adjusted TAI was two points higher than that of October 2015.
Respondents to the survey cited political stability, seasonal factors, the weak economy, the regulatory environment and skills shortages as complicating trade conditions.
Real retail trade remained at about the same level as last year, while merchandise export volumes and merchandise import volumes were lower than a year ago.
New-vehicle sales were about 10% lower in October than a year ago.
“These numbers confirm the restrained trade conditions experienced by respondents,” said Sacci.
Although new orders improved and supplier deliveries, inventories and backlogs were unchanged, sales volumes dipped from 55 in September to 52 in October.
There was an upward tick in sales and input prices, but price expectations were lower than earlier in the year. The employment subindex declined slightly to 49 after having dropped by four index points to 50 in September.
Trade expectations remained in positive territory, but declined from 59 to 55 month-on-month in October.
The seasonally adjusted Trade Expectations Index also declined from 60 to 57, with sales and new orders expectations both declining.
There were two components, namely, supplies and employment prospects, that improved from September. In Inflationary expectations on input costs, as well as sales prices, have increased somewhat and still remain high.
