National carriers South African Airways (SAA) and Air Seychelles on Thursday announced their plans to enable seamless connections through a code share agreement.

State-owned national airline SAA and its counterpart Air Seychelles would code share on Air Seychelles flights between Johannesburg and the Seychelles.

SAA would attach its code on Air Seychelles’ nonstop flights between Johannesburg and Seychelles and, subject to approvals, place its codes on flights between Mahé and Praslin – two of the biggest islands in the Seychelles.

A code share agreement enables two or more airlines to share the same flight, allowing a seat to be bought for a passenger on another cooperating, operating airline.

“This partnership signals a strategic move by both airlines to increase connectivity and grow their networks,” said SAA GM for commercial Manoj Papa.

The agreement followed Air Seychelles’ move in March to increase the number of weekly return flights to Johannesburg to three, with daytime departures and arrivals.

The airlines would also examine the option of allowing Air Seychelles to place its codes on SAA nonstop flights between Johannesburg and destinations across South Africa.

The parties also aimed to include a frequent flyer programme reciprocity on the flights and increase code share destinations on their respective networks, subject to approval.

Ticket sales would open on April 29 for travel from April 30.
