Neotel, Wapa partner to improve rural telecoms reach
Converged communications network operator Neotel and nonprofit industry representative body Wireless Access Providers' Association (Wapa) have partnered to mitigate the challenges of telecommunications services outside major metropolitans.
The partnership, which provided Neotel access to Wapa resources, aimed to improve telecommunications access in under-serviced smaller cities, towns and rural areas in South Africa.
“Neotel and Wapa will work together to foster strategic partnerships between larger and smaller companies to extend the reach of [high-] quality products and services to communities in under-serviced areas and explore the development of new products and services that address the opportunities and challenges specific to those areas,” Neotel GM Angus Hay said in a statement on Friday.
Neotel, now a full Wapa member, planned to overlay its broadband products over Wapa’s wireless infrastructure, enabling the many Internet service providers, businesses and end-users currently relying on asymmetric digital subscriber line or cellular services, to boost bandwidth for video conferencing or streaming media.
Neotel’s capacity and fibre, together with the wireless infrastructure and local reach of Wapa members, could deliver a host of services, including high-speed voice and Internet, backhaul and hosted solution, with Neotel becoming the preferred communications partner to Wapa members.
