JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The results of a 2012 drilling programme at Aim-listed Bushveld Minerals’ Limpopo-based iron-ore play have revealed a 38-million ton indicated mineral resource of friable, potentially free-dig material at a depth of less than 30 m.

The Aim-listed iron- and tin-focused mineral developer reported recoveries of 86% for 53% iron in concentrated grades for massive ore from the weathered zone.

CEO Fortune Mojapelo believed the results vindicated the company’s decision to proceed with metallurgical test work.

“Apart from providing an improved definition of the outcrop zone of the project, the potential of the weathered resource lies in its lower free-dig mining cost proposition.

The size of this resource, at 38-million tons in the indicated resource category, demonstrates high recoveries for a good-quality concentrate product,” he said in statement on Wednesday.

Detailed delineation of the weathered resource had, however, resulted in a slight decrease in the total tonnages of the P-Q zone from 752-million tons to 716-million tons, but the company said this was to be expected, owing to the lower density of the weathered zone and better definition of the P-Q zone at shallow depths.
