TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Canadian miner Dominion Diamond Corp on Tuesday reported strong diamond production from both the Diavik and Ekati mines, in the Northwest Territories, producing a total of 2.4-million carats during the third quarter ended September 30.

The company said operations improved at Diavik, where it produced 1.7-million carats from 500 000 t of ore. The operation was on track to reach 7.3-million carats from 1.9-million tonnes of ore taken both from underground mining and from stockpiles for 2013.

Dominion was currently focusing on mining the A-154 North, A-154 South, A-418 and RPR kimberlite pipes.

The Ekati mine produced 400 000 ct from about 900 000 t of ore, and added 300 000 ct from processing 200 000 t of coarse ore rejects and a satellite body in the Misery pit.

The bulk of the output came from the Fox pit and the Koala and Koala North underground mines. Dominion expected to produce about one-million carats at the mine.

Dominion said it had relocated its senior management team to Yellowknife, which together with the addition of Chantal Lavoie as president and COO, was already demonstrating operational benefits.
