World Bank

The World Bank is a multilateral development finance institution that provides loans, grants and technical assistance to governments in low-income and middle-income countries to support economic development and poverty reduction. Established in 1944 at the Bretton Woods Conference, it is headquartered in Washington, DC, and comprises two main institutions: the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Development Association. The organisation is owned by 189 member countries, which contribute capital and guide policy through a board of governors and an executive board. The World Bank finances projects in infrastructure, health, education, agriculture, governance and climate resilience, often working alongside the International Monetary Fund and regional development banks. It is a major source of development finance for African countries, supporting initiatives ranging from power generation and transport networks to social safety nets and institutional reform. The bank's lending is typically conditional on policy reforms and project performance benchmarks, and it publishes influential research and data on global development trends. In recent years, the World Bank has emphasised climate finance, fragility and conflict, and private-sector mobilisation as strategic priorities. Its activities in the Horn of Africa and Ethiopia have included support for economic reform programmes, infrastructure investment and humanitarian response. The institution plays a significant role in shaping development policy and coordinating donor efforts in partnership with governments, civil society and the private sector.
