Queensland

Queensland is a state in north-eastern Australia, with its capital in Brisbane. It is the second-largest Australian state by area and the third-most populous, with a population of about five-million people. The state's economy is highly diversified, with dominant sectors including mining, agriculture, tourism, education and advanced manufacturing. Queensland is a major global producer of coal, accounting for a significant share of Australia's thermal and metallurgical coal exports, and also produces substantial quantities of base metals, including copper, zinc and lead. The state hosts significant uranium deposits, particularly in the north-west, though uranium mining has been subject to policy restrictions. Other key resources include bauxite, gold, silver and natural gas, with large coal-seam gas developments in the Surat and Bowen basins. Agriculture remains important, with cattle grazing, sugar cane, grain and horticulture contributing strongly to the rural economy. Queensland's ports, including Gladstone, Hay Point and Abbot Point, are critical infrastructure for bulk commodity exports to Asia. The state government has pursued economic diversification strategies, promoting renewable energy, hydrogen production and critical minerals development. Queensland was separated from New South Wales in 1859 and has since developed into one of Australia's most resource-rich and economically significant states.
