Fuel Retail

Fuel retail refers to the industry segment involved in selling petrol, diesel and related products directly to consumers and businesses through service stations and forecourts. It encompasses major oil companies and independent operators that run branded filling stations, often combined with convenience retail offerings such as shops, food outlets and car-wash services. In South Africa and across sub-Saharan Africa, key participants include Shell, BP, TotalEnergies, Engen, Sasol, Astron Energy and Caltex, alongside state-linked entities such as ADNOC in other regions. The sector is shaped by fuel price regulation, exchange-rate movements, crude oil costs and government-set margins, which constrain retailer profitability on fuel sales alone. As a result, operators increasingly rely on non-fuel revenue streams, including convenience retail partnerships with grocery and quick-service brands, to improve margins. Brand equity and customer loyalty programmes play a significant role in differentiating outlets in a largely commoditised product category. The industry faces long-term disruption from the global shift towards electric vehicles, prompting some fuel retailers to invest in charging infrastructure. Fuel retail also intersects with broader energy security and supply-chain considerations, given reliance on imported crude and refined products in many African markets. The sector remains a significant employer and contributor to national fiscal revenue through fuel levies and taxes.
