Project Description
The core function of the scheme is the distribution of purified bulk water for mining, industrial and domestic use, and will provide a sustainable water supply to 2040.

Phase 1 of the project was completed in 2022 and currently supplies water to municipalities, various mines, the agriculture sector and about 6 000 households in the Gamagara and Tsantsabane local municipalities.

Phase 2 includes the upgrade of the remaining 300 km pipeline from the Vaal river pumpstation to Roscoe near Kathu, as well as associated water infrastructure, including pumpstations and reservoirs. 

Once completed, the project is expected to improve water supply to municipalities, mines, farmers and other industries within the John Taolo Gaetsewe district.

Capital Expenditure
Phase 1 cost R1.4-billion. Phase 2 is estimated at R14.9-billion, and is being delivered through a landmark partnership between government and the private sector, with commercial users committing 56% of the required funding.

Planned Start/End Date
Phase 1 was completed in 2022.

Latest Developments
Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister David Mahlobo has announced plans to establish a political steering committee to track progress on Phase 2 of the project. The project managers will be expected to submit monthly progress reports.
