Sappi joins a global programme to eliminate harmful chemicals in the fashion supply chain
South Africa-based global woodfibre-based renewable resources group Sappi has announced that it has joined the ZDHC Foundation Roadmap to Zero programme. This programme seeks to eliminate harmful chemicals from the fashion industry’s global supply chain. (ZDHC stands for Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals.)
Sappi, under its Sappi Verve brand, supplies the fashion industry with premium dissolving wood pulp (DWP). This is the renewable raw material employed in the production of soft and breathable fabrics, which, in turn, are used to make a wide range of products, from home textiles to everyday wear, professional wear and fashion. In particular, DWP is used to manufacture cellulosic fibres, for example lyocell and viscose.
“Our collaboration with ZDHC strengthens our ability to support our customers and suppliers in meeting evolving industry expectations,” affirmed Sappi Verve sustainability head Krelyne Andrew. It also strengthens the group’s commitment to responsibly managing the chemicals used in its DWP operations, worldwide.
Sappi, as the supplier of a raw material, realises that the achievement of more sustainable outcomes requires collaborations that extend beyond its own operations. Joining the ZDHC increases the group’s ability to achieve such collaborations, with fibre producers, manufacturers, brands and other partners in the Sappi Verve value chain. These collaborations enable the better addressing of common challenges, such as water stewardship, chemical management and improved transparency across the supply chain.
“Responsible textile manufacturing doesn’t just start at the garment factory,” explained Sappi. “For Sappi Verve, it’s about bridging the gap between raw material and downstream manufacturing, reflecting the belief that meaningful environmental progress is a shared responsibility, requiring partnerships at every stage of the fabric’s journey.”
The group sourced its woodfibre from responsibly managed forests in both South Africa and North America. It is actively working with other players in the sector to achieve a more sustainable and low-impact textile industry.
