A study by the National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers (NAACAM) and the International Labour Organization finds South Africa's shift from internal combustion engine vehicles to new-energy vehicles (NEVs) could put an estimated 8 200 direct jobs at risk by 2035 in a worst-case scenario, though the right industrial policy could create about 3 370 new jobs through localising components such as wire harnesses and thermal management systems. The study recommends demand- and supply-side incentives, skills audits and expanded NEV training, noting many local manufacturers are not yet planning to diversify, citing policy uncertainty and limited incentives.
