Digitalisation

Digitalisation is the process of converting analogue information and processes into digital formats and integrating digital technologies into business operations, infrastructure and service delivery. It encompasses the adoption of sensors, data analytics, cloud computing, automation and connectivity to optimise performance, improve decision-making and enable real-time monitoring and control. The technology is distinct from digitisation, which refers simply to converting information from physical to digital form, whereas digitalisation involves transforming entire workflows and business models. Key applications include smart grids for electricity distribution, intelligent water management systems, predictive maintenance in manufacturing, and digital twins that create virtual replicas of physical assets. Sectors adopting digitalisation include utilities, mining, manufacturing, logistics, healthcare and municipal services, where it enables remote monitoring, automated responses to system failures, and data-driven resource allocation. In the utilities sector, digitalisation supports demand management, fault detection and integration of renewable energy sources, while in industrial settings it underpins Industry 4.0 initiatives that connect machines, supply chains and enterprise systems. The technology has gained particular significance in regions experiencing infrastructure strain, where digital tools can extend asset life, reduce downtime and improve service reliability without requiring large-scale capital investment. Adoption is driven by falling sensor costs, advances in wireless connectivity and the growing availability of cloud-based platforms that allow organisations to scale digital capabilities incrementally. Digitalisation has evolved rapidly since the early twenty-first century, accelerated by the proliferation of the Internet of Things, machine learning algorithms and high-speed mobile networks.

FLS and Innomotics showcase digital tools for African mining efficiency

FLS is strengthening its African mining strategy ahead of Electra Mining Africa 2026, focusing on digital solutions, predictive maintenance and full flowsheet optimisation to help operations improve energy efficiency and reduce costs. Innomotics has demonstrated AI-enabled tools that convert engineering documentation into digital intelligence, allowing companies to extract data from process diagrams, automate project tracking and provide field personnel with mobile access to technical information through natural-language queries.

South Africa's industrial strategy anchored by decarbonisation, diversification and digitalisation

The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition released an Industrial Development Strategy on June 8 built around three pathways: decarbonisation to transition production toward low-carbon technologies, diversification to expand value addition beyond resource-intensive activities, and digitalisation to embed digital technologies across industries and raise productivity. The strategy also includes measures to stem deindustrialisation, such as designating steel as a strategic commodity and extending discounted electricity tariffs to energy-intensive sectors.

Sensors and data platforms underpin mining automation and retail energy management

De Beers' Upstream Technology says reliable sensor technology is the foundation of automation, enabling offshore crawler mining to shift from manual joystick control to largely autonomous operation and supporting fall-of-ground safety through LiDAR roof mapping. AVEVA is helping mining and metals companies meet critical mineral demand through data and digitalisation across the lifecycle, while Schneider Electric's cloud platforms are enabling retailers to centralise energy monitoring and cut waste across store portfolios.
