JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Southern African gold miner Metallon has announced the appointment of CEO designate and company stalwart Ken Mekani as permanent CEO of the company.

Mekani, who has been with the company for 28 years, has held the position of CEO designate for the last nine months, working closely with former CEO and deputy chairperson Mzi Khumalo.

As CEO, he would continue to focus on gold production growth in Zimbabwe, the development of new projects and the implementation of corporate strategy.

Mekani joined Metallon as a graduate trainee metallurgist in June 1987 and was appointed plant metallurgist after completing the company’s graduate trainee programme.

He spent several years at the group’s various operations before being appointed acting COO of Metallon Gold Zimbabwe in 2012. A year later, he was appointed GM of the group’s flagship operation, How Mine.

He holds a BSc in Metallurgical Engineering from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, in the US, and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Zimbabwe Graduate School of Management.
