PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The nickel division of Swiss-listed Xstrata this week reported that operations at the Sinclair mine, in Western Australia, would cease on May 15, as the operation reached the end of its expected mine life.

The miner said stockpiled ore would continue to be processed at the mill into the third quarter of this year.

The Sinclair mine, which first went into production as an openpit mine in 2008 and transitioned to an underground mine the following year, has, to date, produced over 1.4-million tons of ore, including an estimated 170 500 t of ore in 2013.

The closure of the Sinclair operation comes on the heels of Xstrata suspending operations at its Cosmos nickel mine, also in Western Australia, at the end of September last year.

At the time, the diversified miner said it would initiate a care-and-maintenance schedule at the mine, reducing staff numbers by around 150.

The closure of the Cosmos mine, which had produced more than 2.9-million tons of ore between its commissioning in 2000 and its close, was blamed on the tumbling nickel price.
