WSP in Africa, one of the largest multi-disciplinary engineering consulting firms on the continent, proudly acknowledge the contributions of the firm’s engineers to two winning projects in the Industrial Development and Overall Transformation categories of the 2019 SAPOA Property Development Awards for Innovative Excellence, as announced in June.

The winning projects included:

Industrial Development: Cummins Southern Africa

Cummins is a global company that designs, manufactures, services and distributes diesel and alternative fuel engines and power generation products as well as related components and technology. Cummins sells in approximately 190 countries and territories through a network of more than 6000 company-owned and independent distributors and approximately 6000 dealers. 

The company also has a long history of customer support in Africa, with representation in 51 African countries, and Cummins new Southern Africa regional head office facility is a testament to the companies continued investment into its operations and commitment to customer support on the continent. 

Located along the N1 highway in Waterfall City, in Midrand, the efficient building design for the Cummins regional head office has been furnished with several innovative energy saving technologies – including a custom designed cool HVAC system. 

Engineers from WSP provided mechanical (HVAC) and fire engineering design and consulting services on this project.

Overall Transformation: Cape Town International Convention Centres (CTICC) 2

The CTICC 2 hosted several [event first] showcase events before officially opening in January 2018. Located opposite and due east of the original convention centre (CTICC), construction of the R900-million expansion commenced in 2014 and has been a collaborative project by the CTICC and its shareholders - the City of Cape Town, Western Cape Government and SunWest International.

CTICC 2 adds an additional 31 148 square meters to the entire complex, including 10 000 square meters of conference and exhibition space, a further 3 000 square meters of formal and informal meeting space – which has been translated to six exhibition halls, four meeting suites, five meeting pod rooms, an executive boardroom, three open-air terraces including a rooftop venue, a coffee shop, and a multi-level parking garage.

Additionally, new facility centre boasts an environmentally sustainable design, high-tech venue control systems, high-calibre IT infrastructure, free public Wi-Fi, three production kitchens to cater for every type of event, and a service tunnel under Heerengracht avenue connecting CTICC 2 with CTICC 1. 

Further developments have also guaranteed that the CTICC 2 has been fully integrated with the original centre to ensure seamless event operations – and thereby strengthening the overall convention centre’s positioning as a world-class venue and the city’s reputation as a global business events destination.
