JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (Sewpac) and Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke have extended the consideration period for Whitehaven Coal’s Maules Creek project to April 30.

Whitehaven MD Tony Haggarty on Thursday said he was disappointed with the delay, after months of engagement with Sewpac and Burke to address any concerns related to the project.

“Whitehaven is not aware of any substantive issues with the environmental evaluations or process that has been followed,” he said in a statement.

Haggarty added that the approval process, which started in August 2010, had included extensive community and stakeholder consultation and specialist assessment of environmental impacts.

Local community representatives and interests groups, local government, various government departments, the New South Wales Planning Assessment Commission, the Independent Expert Scientific Committee on Coal Seam Gas and Large Coal Mining Development and Sewpac, have all had input in the process.

Haggarty said he looked forward to hearing the reasons behind Burke’s decision to extend the process and would, as a matter of urgency, address any questions from the Minister or Sewpac.

The Maules Creek coal project was located in north-west New South Wales and was considered one of the few remaining tier-one undeveloped coal assets in Australia, with 320-million tons of marketable reserves.
