PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Coal miner Whitehaven Coal has signed a new rail haulage agreement with freight solutions provider Asciano’s Pacific National Coal, which would replace a previous haul agreement.

The new agreement provided for a more efficient train fleet configuration in readiness for full 30 t axle load operations, which would start during 2015.

The agreement volume has remained unchanged at 9.5-million tonnes a year under the current 25 t axle load conditions, and increased to 11.5-million tonnes a year following the introduction of the 30 t axle load conditions.

The new agreement would become effective in January and would expire in June 2026.

Pacific National Coal director David Irwin pointed out that the new agreement provided the company with the certainty required to commit to the more efficient fleet configuration.

Whitehaven would benefit through an overall reduction in per tonne haulage costs and less overall train services required for any given volume. In addition, significant benefits would also be gained from the increased efficiency in the use of track capacity, Irwin said.

“We are pleased to have worked constructively with Whitehaven to create this win-win agreement, and look forward to delivering Whitehaven improved efficiency, higher levels of service and reduced per tonne haulage cost.”

Whitehaven is currently the leading coal producer in New South Wales' Gunnedah basin with a number of producing mines. The company has also started construction of the Maules Creek mine, which would deliver 13-million tonnes a year of coal by 2015.
