PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Coal miner Whitehaven Coal has reported a number of records for the December quarter, on the back of strong output from its Narrabri mine, in New South Wales.

Run-of-mine (RoM) coal production for the quarter was up 39% on the previous corresponding period to 3.2-million tonnes, while saleable coal production was up 44% on the previous quarter to 2.8-million tonnes.

Whitehaven reported that RoM production at the Narrabri mine exceeded the project’s nameplate capacity over a number of weeks, with production up 81% on the previous corresponding quarter, at 1.9-million tonnes.

The total RoM production from Whitehaven’s opencut operations reached 1.3-million tonnes during the quarter, which was also a 4% increase on the previous corresponding period, despite the miner placing its Sunnyside mine on care and maintenance last year.

Meanwhile, construction of the Maules Creek project also started, and first coal was expected in the first quarter of calendar 2015.

Total sales for the quarter were up 52% on the previous corresponding period, with Whitehaven selling some 3.15-million tonnes, of which 0.62-million was exported metallurgical coal and 2.48-million was thermal coal.

There were also 53 000 t of domestic thermal coal sales during the quarter under review.
