Union strike not impacting SAA, Prasa operations - spokespersons
State-owned enterprises South African Airways (SAA) and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) on Friday said that strike action by emerging union, the National Transport Movement (NTM), had not affected their operations and business continued as usual.
A “handful” of individuals were gathered in the parking area of SAA’s head office, on the East Rand, while about 50 workers failed to report for duty at Prasa’s operations in Johannesburg, company spokespersons told Engineering News Online.
Newswires earlier quoted NTM deputy general-secretary Liver Mngomezulu as saying that both SAA and Prasa were refusing to recognise the union and had planned strikes at each of the companies on Friday.
A gazetted notice by the Department of Labour revealed that the newly formed trade union had been registered since September 27 last year.
“There has been no impact whatsoever on SAA’s operations as a result of the strike. We emphasise that no flights have been cancelled or delayed as a result of the industrial action,” SAA spokesperson Tlali Tlali told Engineering News Online.
Prasa spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng said that the rail operator's operations were running as normal and contingency plans had ensured that the strike had no impact.
The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) commissioner concluded that, with NTM’s 1 111 members, it failed to meet the required 30% threshold, or 1 220 members, to become recognised by SAA.
Mofokeng commented that Prasa would initiate disciplinary action against the workers.
She added that Prasa believes the union should have held off on its illegal strike until the verification process of the union’s membership numbers at the rail operator, which was currently under way, was completed at the end of January or early February and the CCMA announced its decision.
