‘Truly remarkable’ mine safety improvement – Cutifani
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The 66% safety improvement achieved by South Africa’s mines in the last ten years was “truly remarkable” and world leading, Chamber of Mines of South Africa president Mark Cutifani said on Tuesday.
Cutifani, who delivered the opening address at the second annual Mining Lekgotla, said that safety on South Africa’s mines to date this year was also the country’s best safety performance ever.
If the country continued its current safety trend, it could become a global mine safety leader.
The 66% improvement in fatality reduction was considerably greater than the US’s 47% in the same period and Canada’s 25%.
Cutifani said that South Africans tended not to sell the good things taking place in the country.
The mining industry needed to enter into a new constructive engagement with government and labour to create a better industry and a better country.
“Let’s step up to the plate and strive to put South Africa first,” Cutifani urged.
National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) president Senzeni Zokwana, who was due to speak after Cutifani but failed to meet the programme time, eventually arrived and gave a resounding speech on the need of South Africa to give investors confidence – but also warned that there could be no progress if wanton lawlessness continued.
Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu, who is in Australia at the Africa Down Under conference, was due to provide a recorded message, but this was not broadcast.
It was left to Salesforce.com’s Peter Schwartz, to deliver his keynote speech early.
The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union's exhibition stand reserved for it at the Lekgotla was also left bare with no exhibits placed.
