PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Copper miner Straits Resources has reported an increase in production at its Tritton operations, in New South Wales, as copper grades improved.

During the three months to September, the Tritton operation delivered 7 012 t of copper, compared with the 6 271 t delivered in the three months to June.

Copper grades increased as a result of the mine stope sequence moving into higher-grade areas of the orebody. The North East mine also delivered higher grades, compared with the previous year, which resulted from a combination of the mining front progressing into naturally higher-grade mineral resource, and a redesign of stopes to remove subgrade material.

The Tritton mill achieved a new monthly throughput record during August, processing some 148 097 t of ore.

Copper production for the full year was expected to reach some 27 000 t.

Meanwhile, C1 costs for the quarter under review were reported at A$2.34/t, slightly below the A$2.49/t reported in the previous quarter, as higher copper production offset slightly higher total costs.

Straits did not produce any gold during the quarter from its Mt Muro gold mine, in Indonesia, which was shut down after subsidiary PT Indo Muro Kencane (PT IMK) failed to progress the mine to a cash positive status.

An Indonesian court recently approved a settlement plan by PT IMK, which would see ownership of the subsidiary and the asset transferred to creditors.
