Prolonged protest action at Eskom’s Medupi power station posed a “material threat” to the project’s timelines, Eskom spokesperson Hilary Joffe told Engineering News Online on Tuesday.

The power station’s first unit was expected to generate first power to South Africa’s national grid by the end of this year, but construction at the project remained suspended, pending the resolution of ongoing negotiations between industry associations and the relevant trade unions that had expressed grievances.

“We urge all to cooperate to get the site operational again as soon as possible,” Joffe said.

The industrial action, now in its second week, had been characterised by outbursts of violence by protesting workers and had resulted in some 25 injuries and several arrests.
