Straits packs a punch in June Q
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Metals miner Straits Resources has reported a 12% and 48% production increase for copper and gold respectively, during the three months to June.
The miner noted that copper production for the quarter under review increased to 6 271 t, as the Tritton mine increased output. Straits said that the improved performance could be attributed to the improved broken stock inventory related to stope sequencing.
Ore processed for the period also increased by 17% over the last quarter, with 350 270 t milled during the period.
Meanwhile, gold production from the Mt Muro gold mine, in Indonesia, increased to 15 537 oz during the quarter under review.
Operations at Mt Muro were suspended at the end of the June following an altercation between the local police and illegal miners. Several buildings as well as light vehicles were burned in this incident, but no staff or contractors were hurt.
Operations restarted on July 8, and return to full mining production is expected to take until the end of the month.
Straits pointed out that the Serujan pit mining plan was also currently under review to take into account the lower commodity price environment.
The central area of the Serujan pit has been redesigned to remove the highest strip ratio material and to delay mining this area in order to focus on the higher-grade east and west ends of the pit. This would result in waste mining being reduced during 2014.
