JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The processing under way at West Africa-focused diamond development company Stellar Diamond’s Tongo kimberlite dyke project has yielded 12% higher diamond grades than previously calculated.

The Sierra Leone-based project has yielded 730 ct with an undiluted grade of 134 ct per hundred tonnes (cpht) – up from the previously calculated resource grade of 120 cpht – with a high proportion of diamonds classified as gem quality, with stones of up to 6.7 ct reported.

"The ongoing bulk sampling continues to yield high grades from the Dyke-1 kimberlite at Tongo,” Stellar CEO Karl Smithson commented on Wednesday, adding that the grades were expected to further increase after reprocessing of sample material.

The bulk sampling was set to conclude in June when a 1 000 ct parcel was delivered for diamond value modelling as part of a definitive feasibility study, which was due in 2015.

“We anticipate that these increased grades will enhance the project's global resource and economics, where the independent Joint Ore Reserve Committee-compliant resource currently stands at 1.1-million carats at a grade of 120 cpht for just one of four kimberlite dykes within the licence area,” Smithson concluded.
