The Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of South Africa (Seifsa) will intensify its efforts to accelerate the development of skills required for the implementation of South Africa’s National Development Plan (NDP).

The federation, which represents 27 independent associations whose members collectively employ close to 200 000 people, said South Africa was at a stage in its economic development in which a “quantum leap” was required to enable the State to provide adequately for its people.

However, this remained contingent on investment in infrastructure and human capital.

Seifsa executive director Kaizer Nyatsumba said in a statement on Wednesday that both infrastructure and human capital investment were crucial to ensure the competitiveness of the steel and engineering industries.

“Accordingly, the federation has decided to intensify its proactive engagement efforts with the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority, as well as further education and training colleges, to influence the acceleration of training and education skills sets needed for the sector to thrive,” he commented.

Moreover, Seifsa and its members were working with relevant government departments to establish product designation under public sector procurement protocols, which the organisation believed would lead to the expansion of local manufacturing capacity.

Seifsa chief economist Henk Langenhoven added that the steel and engineering sector was a net importer of goods and services, which accounted for a nearly R50-billion deficit on the trade balance in 2012.

“The ultimate objective of the NDP is growth and job creation. The steel and engineering sector is doing everything in its power to contribute to the largest possible spin-off into the domestic economy with regard to infrastructure expansions and, equally, to maintain export competitiveness,” he said.
