PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Gold miner St Barbara has redeployed personnel to its Gold Ridge mining operations, on the Solomon Islands, after reaching an agreement with the government.

Operations at Gold Ridge were halted in April this year, and personnel were evacuated following torrential rains that caused significant damage to infrastructure.

The Solomon government subsequently advised the miner that a number of its expatriate officers and managers would not be allowed to return to the Solomon Islands, giving no reason for the order.

St Barbara said this week that it had reached an agreement with the government that saw the immigration ban being lifted, enabling a site assessment at Gold Ridge and a range of agreed-upon site works to be undertaken.

A preliminary review of the Gold Ridge site indicated that key assets and infrastructure had been well secured; however, a large number of illegal miners have returned to the mining area.

The gold miner said that it would conduct an agreed-upon range of site works, with particular focus on lowering water levels in the tailings dam, which had risen significantly during the torrential rainfall.

The company would also work to reduce its holding cost and assess strategic options for the Gold Ridge operation.

Meanwhile, the Solomon Island government has established an interim working group, comprising the permanent secretaries of key departments, representatives of landowner groups, senior government personnel and government advisers, to work with St Barbara to expedite government approvals and reporting processes.
