Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are increasingly driving South Africa’s cloud computing services industry, says Telkom Business head of product portfolio, architecture and innovation Vaughn Naidoo.

Speaking to media during a tour of Telkom’s data centre in Pretoria last week, he noted that the current total market for cloud computing services in South Africa was valued at $185-million.

This was expected to reach $390-million by 2017, driven by strong uptake of services by the SME market.

The global cloud services market reached a value of $131-billion last year and was expected to grow to $180-billion by the end of 2015 as cloud spend rapidly increased.

Naidoo predicted that about 60% of all server workloads would be virtualised by 2014, with business applications  accounting for 52% of cloud computing spend.

Telkom boasted the largest Tier 3 and Tier 4 data centres in South Africa, noting that explosive data growth and an increasing demand to access data from “any device, any time, any where”, adding that the maintenance of information security was boosting the need for easy-to-scale infrastructure capacity, agility and information technology solutions.
