VANCOUVER (miningweekly.com) – Operations have resumed at Canadian diversified miner Sherritt International's Moa joint venture mine and high-pressure acid leach operations in eastern Cuba, with minimal damage in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.

Hurricane Matthew was a Category 4 storm when it swept across eastern Cuba on Monday and Tuesday, before departing late on Wednesday.

Sherritt said that under Moa Nickel's standard operating procedures, it implemented gradual shutdown measures ahead of the hurricane and operations have subsequently resumed in a staged process.

Despite output being paused by the shutdown and shipments delayed as a result of carriers being unable to dock safely at the Moa port during the hurricane, Sherritt does not expect any impact to the current full-year guidance of 33 500 t to 34 500 t of finished nickel.

Sherritt holds a 50% stake in the Moa mine, with General Nickel Company of Cuba owning the balance.
