South African Airways (SAA) on Wednesday announced that it would realign its available aircraft to strengthen service to some of its key African destinations, which was in line with the strategic objectives of its long-term turnaround strategy.

“These plans are captured in our African expansion strategy where we aim to increase frequencies on routes with higher passenger volumes with the achievement and maintenance of commercial sustainability [being] our ultimate aim,” SAA acting commercial GM Kendy Phohleli said.

Flights between Johannesburg and Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, would be increased from four to six flights a week, effective December 10, while flights between Johannesburg and Dar es Salaam, in Tanzania, would be increased from 12 to 13 a week, effective December 13.

From January 12 onwards, SAA would fly between Johannesburg and Windhoek, in Namibia, 21 times a week, and flights between Johannesburg and Ndola, in Zambia, would be increased to 20 a week, effective January 13.

Flights between Johannesburg and Lusaka, in Zambia, would also be increased from 19 to 20 a week, from January 14 onwards, SAA said.

Further, SAA would, from December 7, no longer operate its own aircraft between Johannesburg and Bujumbura, in Burundi, and Kigali, in Rwanda.
“SAA will in future service this market through its recently announced code share partner RwandAir,” SAA said.

The airline added that customers already holding ticketed reservations on these routes from December 8 onwards would be re-accommodated by SAA’s airline partners.

In addition, SAA customers travelling on selected regional routes into Africa, such as those to Mauritius and Nairobi, would be able to experience the airline’s new Airbus A320 aircraft with 24 business-class and 114 economy-class seats.

SAA had, to date, taken delivery of two new A320s, which formed part of an order of 20 new aircraft.
