South African Airways (SAA) this week marked another milestone in its fleet modernisation plan, as the State-owned group received the first two A320 aircraft ordered from European planemaker Airbus.

SAA ordered 20 aircraft in 2010 from the Airbus A320 family in efforts to replace the current Boeing 737-800 fleet.

“We are delighted to receive our first two A320 aircraft. Operating a modern and homogenous fleet plays a significant role in cost reduction and boosting revenue,” said SAA CEO Monwabisi Kalawe.

The fuel-efficient A320 single-aisle range of aircraft was said to have the lowest operating costs and would deliver cost efficiencies.

The IAE-V2500 engine-powered A320s seated 24 passengers in business class and 114 in economy.

The new fleet, which would complement the airliner’s current fleet of A319s in service, would also allow SAA to expand its sub-Sahara regional route network and boost revenue in the growing market.

At June 2013, the much-coveted single-aisle A320 family accounted for over 9 600 of Airbus’ order book of 13 000 aircraft. To date, Airbus had delivered more than 5 600 A320s to over 380 customers and operators worldwide.
