A memorandum of agreement inked between national carrier South African Airways (SAA) and New York-listed airframe maintenance and supply chain solutions provider AAR, could see the establishment of a joint venture (JV) to support the carrier’s maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) capabilities and expand its services across Africa.

The establishment of the JV partnership would enable SAA’s maintenance arm South African Airways Technical (SAAT) to reduce maintenance costs and increase operational efficiencies and fleet readiness levels, as well as expand its MRO services to third-party customers and airliners across the continent.

AAR, which had a reputation for improving operational efficiencies and turnaround times while lowering costs, would provide operational analysis and technical assistance for MRO and warehouse facilities and integrate information technology solutions, including AAR's 1MRO Software Suite, said SAAT CEO Musa Zwane.

“AAR will also support the expansion of SAAT's component repair capabilities, including for landing gear, and potentially support [the establishment of] a new MRO facility in West and Central Africa to meet growing regional travel in sub-Saharan Africa and increasing international travel to the continent,” he added.
