South African Airways (SAA) and the National Transport Movement (NTM) union on Friday signed an agreement on the terms of reference for the verification process that would assist in the union being recognised by the national carrier.

The announcement followed ongoing strike action by members of NTM, who demanded organisational and collective bargaining rights.

The intent of the signed agreement was to concur on the process to be followed to determine whether the union had sufficient membership to allow it to be recognised.

The airline and the union had further agreed to start verifying the union's membership forms with effect from February 4.

The process, which would be facilitated by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), is expected to last until February 14 and would culminate in a report by the CCMA.

“This development is a welcome move and a step in the right direction, despite the fact that NTM regrettably advised that they will not cease or suspend the strike during the verification process. However, they have agreed to call off the strike when the CCMA delivers its report regardless of the outcome,” said SAA spokesperson Tlali Tlali.

SAA’s operations continued to remain intact with no disruption.
