JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – In a bid to strengthen its board of directors, East Africa-focused gold producer Shanta Gold has appointed the former head of Deloitte’s mining division, Robin Fryer, as independent nonexecutive director and chair of the company's audit committee, with immediate effect.

CEO Mike Houston said in a statement on Monday that Fryer’s expertise would bolster the capabilities of the Shanta Gold board.

“We indicated to shareholders that we wanted to strengthen the board in certain disciplines and we have been fortunate in securing someone with Robin's financial experience, which, importantly, includes an understanding of mining operations in Africa,” he commented.

The announcement came as the Aim-listed company last week reported that it had improved second-quarter gold production by 22% to 14 448 oz, chiefly on the back of improved plant throughput.

Meanwhile, in the context of the increased volatility and a decline in the gold price, the company had delayed all nonessential exploration activity scheduled for the second half of the year – estimated to cost $1.5-million – indefinitely.

“We have a conservative exploration programme in place, focused on increasing the indicated resource at the current operations through a drilling programme to establish the depth and strike extent of mineralisation,” the company said.
