Rio Alto Mining resumes operations at Peruvian mine
TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Vancouver-based gold/copper producer Rio Alto Mining on Wednesday said normal operations have resumed at the La Arena mine site, in Peru, after local protests that started at the end of May, blocked access to the mine.
Rio Alto on Monday temporarily suspended activities at its La Arena gold oxide mine owing to a blockade of the Trujillo to Huamachuco public road by a group led by the Central Unica de Rondas Campesinas (CURC). The Trujillo to Huamachuco road was the company’s main access route for people and supplies.
Starting May 29, the CURC of the Sánchez Carrión province declared an indefinite blockade of all the public access roads in the area of the province as a protest against the Peruvian judicial system, the local district attorney and the Peruvian police force.
Since then, the La Arena gold mine had been able to operate normally on back-up supplies, before stock depleted to a level where mining and civil construction activities had to stop.
Rio Alto did not expect its production guidance of between 190 000 oz to 210 000 oz of gold to be affected. The operation produced 36 355 oz of gold in the first quarter ended March 31.
