A new reach stacker that is the first of its kind in operation in Africa, has been delivered to APM Terminals in Port Elizabeth.

The reach stacker is said to have technologically advanced innovative features which increase productivity and safety while also reducing running costs. The Konecranes SMV 4531 TC5 reach stacker is seen as an important part of APM’s plan to reduce emissions at its port terminal operations and to offer versatile and flexible container handling solutions.

The Konecranes SMV 4531 TC5 reach stacker is distributed in South Africa by EIE Group’s Heavy Lift division. The group emphasises that its product helps meet the customer’s mandate of instilling green practices and that it provides significant  advantages through the implementation of innovations such as the Konecranes Flow Drive driveline, which features Hydrovariable transmission technology, courtesy of Dana Rexroth transmission systems.

EIE asserts that its product encapsulates the best of both worlds, by combining the smoothness of hydrostatic transmissions with the fuel economy characteristics of torque converter type transmissions. This, coupled with a smaller, but more powerful Volvo TAD-853-VE engine, provides greater efficiency and overall lower running costs than that of conventional reach stacker machinery.

In addition, the multifunctional capabilities of the reach stacker mean that it can be used across multiple industries and applications. The machines feature a number of attachments, including steel handling clamps, pipe and tube handling attachments, as well as lifting hooks. The load lifting capacities are said to be superior to other reach stackers, with the first row managing up to 45 t, the second row up to 31 t and the third row lifting 16 t.

The patented Optima cabin is designed to be spacious, allowing additional equipment  to be accommodated if required by a specific application. The cabin aims to provide greater operator visibility through the large lowered window, which has no corner posts and features a thin, strong cross-member and curved panels.

Konecranes TRUCONNECT remote monitoring fleet management system aims to allow the operator to track the real usage of the product, providing an online view and PDF reports for scheduled maintenance. The system also provides safety alerts for issues such as overheating, attempted overloads and emergency stops, with notifications delivered to safety personnel by email or text message.
