PSA oxygen plant programme delivers hope and resilience for SA’s healthcare infrastructure
South Africa has reached a landmark in strengthening its healthcare infrastructure with the successful delivery and installation of Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) oxygen plants. These systems generate medical grade oxygen directly onsite, eliminating reliance on vulnerable supply chains and liquid oxygen deliveries across remote or congested routes. The result is a reliable, 24/7 lifesaving therapy for patients in need.
The PSA oxygen plant delivery project is a national programme designed to transform healthcare capacity across hospitals. By ensuring uninterrupted oxygen supply, it directly supports critical care, emergency response and long-term resilience in the health system.
A highlight of the programme was a site visit to Jubilee Hospital by the Global Fund, which showcased the successful installation and operation of one of the PSA plants. The visit emphasised the impact of the initiative, highlighting that hospitals are now equipped with infrastructure that guarantees independence, resilience and immediate patient care.
The Global Fund, together with the National Department of Health, entrusted the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) to lead this programme through its Infrastructure Delivery Division. DBSA has ensured strict governance, transparent procurement and credible contracting processes. Qualified manufacturers and delivery partners have been appointed to execute installations through a phased approach, ensuring quality and accountability at every stage. The benefits are far-reaching, with hospitals gaining independence from external oxygen supply chains and patients receiving consistent, lifesaving oxygen therapy.
Communities are assured that their facilities can respond to emergencies, with the initiative offering a nationwide impact that is set to benefit over eight-million people.
This initiative is more than infrastructure; it is a commitment to governance, accountability, and human-centred impact. With DBSA’s leadership and the Global Fund’s partnership, South Africa is building resilience into its healthcare system, ensuring hospitals are equipped to save lives today and into the future.
