JSE-listed civil engineering and construction-related services group Protech Khuthele on Thursday said it had secured three new contracts collectively valued at R255-million.

“Despite a persistently tough operating environment in 2013, Protech has added these contracts to the order book, reflecting the group’s long-term strategy of geographical and product diversification,” Protech CEO Antony Page said in a voluntary shareholder announcement.

Construction had already started on a bulk earthworks contract, in Pomona, on the East Rand, which entails the construction of bulk earthworks terraces and platforms for a new warehouse facility, as well as the removal and replacement of unsuitable soils. The work was expected to be completed by March.

Protech had also kicked off the preparation work for a 16-month rail bulk earthworks contract, in Limpopo, which included a 45 km earthworks formation for the construction of a railway line and various drainage and bridge structures.

The third contract would see the group start work this month on the basement excavation and lateral support for a 110 000 m³ area. The Alice Lane bulk earthworks and lateral support project would be completed by October.

“We are encouraged by the recent growth of the order book and remain cautiously optimistic about the year ahead,” Page concluded.
