Ports Regulator rejects proposed 5.4% tariff hike
The Ports Regulator of South Africa has rejected the National Ports Authority’s (NPA’s) request for a 5.4% tariff increase for services and facilities offered by the authority for the period April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014.
After considering the application and all submissions submitted by stakeholders, the regulator determined what it considered to be more appropriate tariff book adjustments for the 2013/14 tariff year, it said in documentation on its website.
The regulator concluded that, in terms of cargo dues tariffs, container-full export cargo dues were to be reduced by 43.2%, container-full import cargo dues were to be reduced by 14.3%, while motor-vehicles-exported-on-own-wheels cargo dues were to be reduced by 21.1%.
The remainder of the tariffs in the tariff book were to be retained at the same level as in the 2012/13 tariff year.
The regulator advised that it would reveal its motivation for the decision in due course.
This decision followed a road show on the proposed NPA tariff methodology and tariff strategy in March, which allowed stakeholders to comment on or query the proposals.
